Hello Fish Families!

Just a quick note from the fish classroom:

Field Day is tomorrow! Any family members planning to join us should be on the back playground by 9:20. Please have your child wear sunscreen and bug spray to school tomorrow. Mrs. Batchelder also told the children that they should wear a hat. We are also asking them to bring a labelled water bottle and a change of clothes/shoes for the afternoon.

The Grand Luncheon is Monday!  Kindergarten is scheduled to have the first lunch from 10:30-11:05 with recess immediately following (11:05-11:25). Due to this early time, we will have "snack" in the afternoon on Monday instead of in the morning. We are all looking forward to meeting all of the special guests.

Our end-of-the-year celebration/last day of kindergarten is Tuesday, June 16. Families are invited to join us for a small performance at 9:30. School will be over by 11:00 that day.

Hope this helps clarify all of the special events we have coming up!

Monday, May 18

Hi Fish Families.

Thank you all so much for the amazing Teacher Appreciation Luncheon and breakfast last week. The food was delicious and we enjoyed the relaxing lunch time without our duties!

I wanted to let you know that we practiced another Lock Down Drill at SMS today. The children were in music at the time. It was their first opportunity to practice this drill outside of our classroom. They did a great job. Surprisingly, many of them said it was the best part of their day.

We will be celebrating May Day on Thursday. We are doing things a tiny bit differently in the fish class this year. As our service project, we will be making Model Magic flowers and spring card for the Meals on Wheels program in the Exeter area. (In past years we have delivered fresh flowers to area nursing homes.) I am excited to participate in this new service learning project and hope it is meaningful for the students as well.

On Thursday, we will also be attending a puppet show at 12:35 in the library. Parents and younger siblings are welcome to join us. We will have an ice cream treat back in the classroom after. (Thank you to everyone who signed up on Signup Genius for this!)

Lastly, Kindergarten Field Day is scheduled for Friday, May 29th. If you would like to help out, please let me know. Volunteers are asked to meet us out by the back playground by 9:15. Field day is scheduled to end by 11:30. There isn't a rain date scheduled, so hope for nice weather!

Greetings Fish Families!

We filled the fish jar again today! Please ask your child how we celebrated.

I have so much to fill you all in on. It has been another learning-filled, busy week in the fish classroom!

Science: I hope you have all been hearing about our chick eggs. We are doing this science unit following an inquiry model where the children are asking questions and having "wonderings". We will then use these wonderings to learn. We predicted how many days it will take for the chicks to hatch, but I haven't told them the answer because we are tallying the days. The children and I recorded data about the 29 eggs including color, size and whether they were dirty or clean.

Writers' Workshop: We are writing like scientists! We cracked open some eggs (from the grocery store) and drew scientific pictures of what we observed. The children labelled and wrote a question or something they noticed. We began to use some egg vocabulary including; shell, yolk, & albumen.

Readers' Workshop: We began an author study this week. We will be focusing on Eric Carle over the next few weeks. We are completing a synthesis chart as we read his books. The children learned about his use of gimmicks this week. We are also developing theories about his art and writing.

Math Workshop: We finished unit #7 and began unit #8. Assessment letters will be coming home on Monday. We have been doing a lot with subtraction this week. I wanted to highlight some apps we are enjoying; Number Lines (using the counting backwards option) and Kindergarten Subtraction (which has a frog with a pink K- icon).

Visual Art: We have been busy making gifts for Mom! We are also making chick art and water colors like Eric Carle.

Music/Movement: GoNoodle continues to be a big hit with the fish! We did a lot of the Maximo choices this week. He works on deep breathing and relaxation.

Up-Coming Events:
May 13- Early Release
May 21- May Day/Puppet Show
May 25- No School (Memorial Day)
May 29- K Field Day
June 1- Grandparent Luncheon
June 16- Last Day of Kindergarten.  We will be having a celebration in the classroom at 9:30 on that morning. Families are invited to attend. Dismissal will be by 11:00. If this is a problem for your family, please let me know!

Have a wonderful Mother's Day weekend!
